Romania has experienced an erratic growth over the last 25 years. Such an erratic growth has produced substantial delays and inconsistencies in the way the local business culture has evolved.
Because of this reality, we have strived to choose a definition of leadership which helps define the term comparatively & contextually, taking into account the local understanding of the term, in comparison to the one used in the international business culture.
We believe that the most relevant definition for us was created by Dr. Russell Ackoff (although in a rather difficult to understand English langue). See also our Definitions.
"These terms are often used interchangeably. What a waste! There are important differences they can be used to reveal. Therefore, I have defined them in a way that is directed at improving leadership and bringing about more significant organizational transformations.
In this formulation, leadership requires an ability to bring the will of followers into consonance with that of the leader so they follow him or her voluntarily, with enthusiasm and dedication.
Such voluntarism, enthusiasm, and dedication are not necessarily involved in either management or administration."
Such a definition is so valuable, because it takes into account, comparatively, the meaning of the other two important business concepts (management and administration), but also because it puts into context the purpose of the leadership act, the means at its disposal, as well as relationship these dimension have with the participants to the leadership act (leader and followers).
We see a lot of value in these definitions because we believe that – here, in Romania - the sooner we can obtain a clear understanding of these different terms and nuances, the sooner we can guide our clients towards clearer and sharper expectations related to various professional profiles or level of seniority.
"Leadership has been poorly understood largely because it is primarily an aesthetic function and aesthetics are also poorly understood."
