In our work, we need clarity in the understanding of fundamental terms. Leadership is such a fundamental term. But clarity is not always possible, especially when the standards used are either ‘unsettled’ or outdated.
The concept of leadership remains such an undefined standard to this day.
Over the years, we have asked ourselves “What can we do about this?” and the answer we have found produced the actions list below:
The work of Dr. Ackoff and – especially - his thinking in the field of transformational leadership are truly inspiring for us especially because it encourages us to clarify the difference between three concepts which we find most important in our Romanian environment: administration, management and leadership.
Dr. Ackoff produces in his article “A systemic View on Transformational Leadership” - a definition of these three terms which we find really relevant to our context. His point of view is extremely important to all of us who work in an emerging market like Romania.
After 1990, our relatively short history in free-market economics did not allow us to achieve a profound understanding of the business world which we became a part of so suddenly. Most concepts have been ‘copied and pasted’ without a clear understanding of what they mean.
This is why – in as far as the terms administration, management and leadership are concerned – we believe that, in Romania, the confusion is generalized: most people who do administrative jobs think they do management, those who do management think they are leaders and those who are real leaders end up having to do all three of the jobs.
On our 20th anniversary, as part of the launching of our new model (Leadership Alliance) we have decided to include within our strategy also a part of services dedicated to the business community which focuses on the importance of a responsible approach to leadership as well as on business values.
The key projects we want to lauch are related to such business values: good corporate governance practices and a code of professional conduct in business. Learn more about our projects here: leadership
Due to the confusion about these three important terms in Romania we have reached the decision that such a distinction must be made with respect to every career, in order to properly ‘map’ the evolution of an executive. When done properly, this distinction can save a lot of wasted time and resources both for an executive’s career AND for the organization.
In fact, we have found this perspective so important that we have centered our entire approach around the need to clarify the difference between these terms and we have designed and developed a state-of-the-art information structuring model which incorporates this idea. This model is called ‘Career Assets Structuring Architecture, in short CASA (see our CASA model].
Our approach brings substantial more clarity over the subject of leadership and creates an eco-system in which we can continue to improve and refine our understanding and our practices of leadership.
The benefits of this approach for corporations is that this system makes possible a much more precise estimate of an executive’s leadership potential.
Many Romanian professionals must learn that there is no such thing as a ‘superior’ job. When done properly, all jobs are equally important. Some people are very good in doing administrative jobs, because this is what they like doing and because they do not want to direct other people. Other people are good managers, because they enjoy organizing things and directing more and more complex teams.
Finally, there are also people who are passionate about the future and who love asking the question: “Why?”. Those (rare) people know the best that the most difficult task one can assume is to explain to thousands of people why things must be done the way they should be done and do this so convincingly that those thousands of people will end up doing those things wholeheartedly.
This is why we find understanding the difference between these three different personalities to be so important and this is why we have put this idea at the very heart of our approach.
